Compare ultrasonic and evaporative humidifiers side by side. Learn how Vornado's Evap40 and Votiv 4 differ in coverage, maintenance, and mist type to find your best fit.
Quick answer
Choose an evaporative humidifier like the Vornado Evap40 for whole-room, filter-based humidification that won't produce white dust. Choose an ultrasonic model like the Vornado Votiv 4 for a compact, quiet option with optional colored light and no filter replacement cost.
How they work: evaporative vs ultrasonic
Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to pull dry air through a wet wick filter, releasing moisture as a cool, invisible mist. Ultrasonic humidifiers use a vibrating diaphragm to create a visible cool mist that is released into the air.
The key difference: evaporative types rely on a filter and fan, which means ongoing filter replacements and some fan noise. Ultrasonic types are nearly silent and have no filter to replace, but they can produce white dust if you have hard tap water.
Coverage and output
If you need to humidify a large room, an evaporative model is usually the better choice. The Vornado Evap40 is rated for spaces up to 1,000 sq. ft. thanks to its Vortex Action that circulates humidified air throughout the room.
Ultrasonic humidifiers like the Vornado Votiv 4 are better suited for smaller spaces such as a bedroom or home office. They lack a fan to actively distribute moisture, so their effective range is more limited.
Maintenance and operating costs
Evaporative humidifiers require periodic filter changes. The Evap40 uses two humidifying filters that need to be replaced based on usage and water quality. This adds recurring cost but also means the water is filtered before it enters the air.
Ultrasonic humidifiers have no filter to replace, so the ongoing cost is lower. However, they may need more frequent cleaning to prevent mineral buildup, and using distilled water can reduce white dust.
Tradeoffs at a glance
- Mist type: Evaporative produces an invisible cool mist; ultrasonic produces a visible cool mist.
- Noise level: Evaporative has a fan that creates a gentle hum; ultrasonic is nearly silent.
- Filter cost: Evaporative requires periodic filter replacements; ultrasonic has no filter to replace. Factor in filter cost over time when comparing prices.
- White dust risk: Evaporative eliminates white dust because water passes through a filter; ultrasonic can produce white dust with hard water. Use distilled water in an ultrasonic humidifier to avoid white dust.
- Coverage area: Evaporative models like the Evap40 can cover up to 1,000 sq. ft.; ultrasonic models like the Votiv 4 are best for smaller rooms.
