Compare ultrasonic and cool mist humidifiers to find the right type for your home. Learn how the Vornado MISTIC 6 and UH100 deliver whole-room humidity.
Quick answer
If you want the quietest operation and the option of warm or cool mist, choose an ultrasonic humidifier like the Vornado MISTIC 6. If you prefer automatic humidity control and a design that simplifies filling and cleaning, a cool mist model like the Vornado UH100 is the better fit.
How They Differ in Operation
Ultrasonic humidifiers use high-frequency vibrations to create a fine mist, which can be heated for warm output or left cool. This makes them nearly silent during use. Cool mist humidifiers, in contrast, use a fan to evaporate water from a wick or filter, producing a gentle sound that some people find soothing but others may notice in a quiet bedroom.
The key trade-off is noise vs. simplicity. Ultrasonic models are whisper-quiet but require regular cleaning to prevent mineral dust. Cool mist models are slightly louder but often self-regulate humidity more naturally.
Coverage and Capacity Differences
Both types can cover large rooms, but the way they distribute moisture differs. Ultrasonic models like the MISTIC 6 can cover up to 700 sq. ft. with 3 gallons per day, while the UH100 covers up to 600 sq. ft. The ultrasonic mist is propelled by a fan, so it reaches farther without pooling. Cool mist units rely on evaporation, which is slower but less likely to over-humidify a space.
For very large open areas, an ultrasonic model may fill the room faster. For medium bedrooms or living spaces, a cool mist unit offers steady, self-regulating output.
Trade-Offs at a Glance
- Noise Level: Ultrasonic models are nearly silent; cool mist models produce a gentle fan hum. Choose ultrasonic for bedrooms or quiet spaces; cool mist is fine for living areas.
- Mist Temperature: Ultrasonic can output warm or cool mist; cool mist is always room temperature. Warm mist can make a room feel cozier in winter, but cool mist is safer around children and pets.
- Maintenance: Ultrasonic needs regular descaling to prevent white dust; cool mist wicks need periodic replacement. If you have hard water, a cool mist model may be less fussy.
- Humidity Control: Cool mist models often have a humidistat for automatic regulation; some ultrasonic models rely on manual settings. For set-and-forget convenience, look for a model with a built-in humidistat.
